Allama Iqbal Open University was established in 1974 under an Act of parliament and it was the 1st distance learning university in Asia. The university is based on the principle of distance learning. There are millions of students who participate in AIOU Matric exams every year.

There are two Matric programs in AIOU:
- Secondary School Certificate (Darse-E-Nazami Group)
- Secondary School Certificate (General Group)
These programs are 2 years programs with 8 semesters. There are two autumn and two spring semesters in every year. The students are provided course audio video cassettes, books specially prepared by the AIOU on self instructional principles.
